Da Chang Muslim Cultural Center: A Poetic Sanctuary

Hejingtang Studio's Innovative Interpretation of Traditional Mosque Architecture

The design of the Da Chang Muslim Cultural Center was inspired by traditional mosques. However, rather than simply mimicking these structures, Hejingtang Studio has reinterpreted the spatial structure of mosques using new materials and technologies. The result is a building that subtly reflects the essence of Islamic architecture while showcasing a unique, contemporary aesthetic.

The building's arches, which gracefully curve from the bottom up, are a standout feature. These arches, reflected in the surrounding water, create a vivid and elegant visual effect. The dome of the building is another noteworthy element. Composed of petaloid shells, it represents an abstract translation of Islamic symbols. This dome also creatively transforms the interior space into a semi-exterior roof garden, filled with sunshine, fresh air, and vegetation.

Constructed with marble, the Da Chang Muslim Cultural Center covers a total area of 35,000 square meters. The building is more than just a place of worship; it is a cultural complex that integrates the functions of a theatre, exhibition space, convention center, and community center. It serves as a spiritual home for the local residents, particularly the Muslim community, and aims to revive Islamic culture and improve the quality of cultural life.

The project, which took place from January 2014 to June 2015, faced several design challenges. One of the main challenges was to shrink the surrounding arches into elegant curves from the bottom up. However, the team, led by He Jingtang and including Guo Weihong, Pan Yudan, Zheng Changbo, Li Kaixin, Chen Zong, Wang Renyu, and Huang Guannan, successfully overcame these challenges, creating a landmark building for Dachang County.

The Da Chang Muslim Cultural Center is not just an architectural masterpiece; it is a poetic sanctuary that showcases the brilliant Islamic culture and a vision for a better life. It is a testament to Hejingtang Studio's innovative design approach and commitment to cultural preservation and enhancement. The building's design, which was recognized with a Platinum A' Design Award in 2018, truly pushes the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology, contributing to societal wellbeing and making the world a better place.
